Lighthouse to receive funds for competing renovations

The preservation grant program of the United States Lighthouse Society (USLHS) will be awarding a grant of $1,000 to Plum Island Light in Newburyport.

Such awards can bemade known throughout the community with poster printing.

Executive director of the Society, Jeffrey Gales, said that as a result of the pandemic, travel and tourism has slowed such that it is harder for lighthouse groups that depend on the revenue from gift sales and tours, yet they still want to share their lights for everyone to enjoy.

The money will be used by Plum Island Light to finish preservation projects. Many cracked panes at the top of the light in the lantern room were replaced during the spring and summer. Special artisans were hired to create the curved panes and install them. Now that this work has been completed, further tasks include painting and repairing the ceilings.

President of the Friends of Plum Island Light, John Vogl, said that the timing was ideal for the receipt of this grant. He added that the work started before the pandemic can now be completed so that the Fresnel lens can be protected and secured for many years in the future. He expressed his gratitude to the USLHS for the funds and all its efforts in preserving the lighthouses across the country.
