Inn street in Newburyport sees revival in the arts

Yankee Homecoming is currently underway in Newburyport, as the Inn Street Artisans Revival has the streets filled with craftspeople, artists, and other vendors from the local area offering their homemade goods in the downtown square.

The annual festival was started by John Brown, owner of Spirit of Newburyport, in 2015 to support local businesses and artists. He commented that even though the city has a designated cultural district, there are fewer opportunities for art and this was one way to improve communication and help to revive art. The Artisans Revival has been successful in achieving this goal.

Now, there are daily vendors on Inn Street, and they gather on Tuesdays for Market Square Craft Day, meaning there are over 110 artists and craftspeople participating and contributing the Yankee Homecoming this year.

One of the highlights of this year’s festival was arranging a series of live art demonstrations inside one of the empty buildings on Pleasant Street, the former Szechuan Taste restaurant. As people pass by the space during the afternoon, they can see artists at work on their projects.

The festival continues through this Sunday, August 5.
