The Museum of Old Newbury will be holding an illustrated lecture and book signing at the Cushing House in Newburyport later this week on the cuisine enjoyed by John and Abigail Adams.
The program will be presented by independent scholar and author Rosana Wan, who has written a cookbook on this topic.
Wan will discuss culinary life in early America gathered from the letters and diaries of John and Abigail Adams during their 54 years of marriage. They enjoyed diverse and hearty cuisine in Massachusetts, as well as Philadelphia, New York, and Europe.
Their basic New England meals included roast turkey, mince pie, plum pudding, and cod, along with the strawberry fool, whipt syllabub, and roast duck that settlers brought from the Old World. The recipes of John Adams that he shared with his wife came from his dinners with families of the upper class in Philadelphia while he served in the Second Continental Congress. Those of Abigail came from her trip across the Atlantic when she joined the first American ambassador to Great Britain.
The program will take place on Thursday, March 26, beginning with a reception at 6:30 pm and the presentation following at 7:00 pm. The use of flyer printing by the Museum to announce this special event to the community could be a good way to highlight the strong connections the Adamses had to Newburyport.
