Flag day race draws supportive crowd

On June 13, the Flag Day 5K was held for the fourth year in Newburyport at Cashman Park. It was in honor of 1st. Lt. Derek Hines.

The 1st Lt. Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Fund hosted the run, which attracted 1,500 runners. The fund provides assistance of a financial nature to soldiers from Massachusetts.

A check for $30,000 was given to the Red Sox’s Run to Home Base program prior to the run. This program treats soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

A check for $5,000 was also given to Team Red White and Blue, a program started by a graduate from West Point that helps get veterans involved and integrated in various sports and athletics across the United States.

The Memorial Scholarship Fund for SFC Jared C. Monti was also the recipient of a check for $5,000.

Along with food and beverages, live music came courtesy of Dalton and the Sheriffs, a country band, playing many popular songs for attendees. The proceeds from the sale of their latest song, which came out on iTunes last week, will be donated to the 1st. Lt. Derek Hines Soldiers Assistance Fund.

There were also tents with information about services for veterans, such as counseling services on readjustment to civilian life, dating, and various mental health issues. Most likely brochure printing companies were used to Print Brochures on these special services for veterans.
