High school seniors who are planning to major in music in college can apply for the Betty Gillette Scholarship which is offered by the Newburyport Choral Society (NCS).
Such scholarships can be made known throughout the community with poster printing services.
This is an amount of $1,000 that is awarded each year. It is named for Betty Gillette, who sang with the chorus from 1934 to 2009 and is one of the founding members of the Society.
The application needs to be filled out and emailed to the Society, or sent via regular mail. As part of the application, students need to write two essays, include a transcript of their grades, and have two references – one of which should be from the applicant’s music teacher. All applications are reviewed by the NCS Scholarship Committee and will be awarded at the end of the academic year.
There are other opportunities for young musicians to benefit from the Society, as it also provides internships for those who want to sing with the Society as part of their community service requirements for graduation. Students can join either the fall or spring concert seasons and are expected to perform in two concerts, sell two tickets to each of their performances, and attend weekly Monday evening rehearsals.
The deadline to submit an application is Friday, May 1.
