Celebrations of the national bird to be held in Newburyport

The Merrimack River Eagle Festival is coming to Newburyport, to be presented by the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and the Joppa Flats Education Center of the Mass Audubon Society.

The Festival will be taking place in downtown Newburyport and throughout the greater Newburyport area, both indoors and outdoors.

From 9:00 am until 1:00 pm tomorrow (February 18), there will be van tours with eagle specialists starting at the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce. At the City Hall, from 10:00 to 11:00 am and again from 12:45 to 1:45 pm, Mary-Beth Kaeser of Horizon Wings will be offering raptor demonstrations.

Throughout the day, at designated spots along the river in Newburyport and Amesbury, naturalists will be providing guided sightings of a variety of wintering river birds and helping visitors look for bald eagles.

Other activities for families will include crafts, games, and live bird demonstrations at the Joppa Flats Education Center and the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters.

Most events on the day are free due to a sponsorship by the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank. For future events, the Mass Audubon Society could to look to a flyer printing company to create handouts with more detailed information, so that visitors can plan their day and learn as much as they can about the bald eagle.
