Bird is the word in Newburyport

The Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport, a center for visitors and natural history, will once again be holding its Superbowl of Birding event later in just a few days’ time.

Now in its 12th year, the competition has had teams come from as far away as Pennsylvania and Delaware to try their luck at this avian pursuit.

During the Superbowl, teams are challenged to find species of birds and then are given points depending on the rarity of the specimens recorded. Those with the greatest number of species and points earned qualify for the various prizes.

Prizes include the Zeiss Joppa Cup (which is the grand prize for the team with the greatest number of points), the Lifer Award (for the participant who sees the most new life birds during the competition), and the Newbies Award (for the greatest number of points earned by any team with two or more members of 18 years of age or younger). This means that activities during the 12-hour competition are aimed towards all levels of birders.

Most likely the Joppa Flats Education Center has turned to various Print companies to help with the printing of registration Forms, official rules, and checklists that the participants need for the event.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, January 24 from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm.
