Malden receives grant for internships to explore teaching

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has awarded the Malden Public Schools a High School Senior Internship in Education Project (HSSIEP) grant in the amount of $16,400.

The HSSIEP program offers paid internships to seniors in high school to allow them to look at the profession of teaching as a career. Students work with students in a classroom setting at elementary school, engage in preparing curriculum, learn teaching methodologies from mentor teachers. The program engages students while they are at high school so as to grow the pipeline of educators and encourages a more diverse educator workforce that reflects the student population in the state.

Local print shops can help spread the word about such grants and the programs they support for high school students.

State Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian, a former seventh grade teacher, said that hands-on experience is important in informing the exploration and learning of a student of future professions.

Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Education, State Senator Jason Lewis, said that these internships are ideal for high school seniors to engage in a paid, hands-on program that enables them to explore the reality of being a teacher. He expressed his pleasure that the Malden schools are receiving such a grant that will both diversify the pipeline of teachers and enable students to see teaching as a potential career path.
