What's Happening in Malden, MA…

Hike in Malden recreational area benefits community

The 1899 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Geodetic Observatory in Malden’s corner of the Fells will be the site for a hike back in time this weekend.

The event was made possible with support from the Mayor’s Office of Malden, MIT, Friends of the Fells, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and Debbie DeMaria, who is Malden City Councilor.

The day will begin at 9:00 am with a guided hike to the Observatory. At 10:00 am, attendees will take part in conversation and commentary about the site. There will also be painting and reinforcement of the interpretive sign at the Observatory, the installation of new documents describing its scientific and historic heritage, and replacing broken plexiglass.

The DCR is providing tools and paints for these activities at the Observatory, and at the Boojum Rock site and at the Boojum Rock sign. Such events that are both enjoyable and contribute to the benefit of the community can be promoted using both flyer printing and poster printing.

There are 76 acres of open land within the borders of Malden and Middlesex Falls in which Boojum Rock and the Observatory are located. The area and natural and managed and can easily be hiked by people ranging from novices to the more advanced.

The hike and related activities are scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 2.
