What's Happening in Malden, MA…

Committee meets to keep kids in school

With the return of another school year comes a recommitment to ensure that more teens graduate from high school in Malden.

The committee, called The Malden’s Promise Coalition, recently kicked off its season at Malden city council chambers on September 20, setting up meeting space like a classroom and spending the afternoon working as a team to brainstorm ways to keep teens in school until a diploma is placed in their hands.

Malden was awarded a grant in 2010 to develop strategies and programming, forming Malden’s Promise. It is a program in which local business such as print companies should become involved, as contributing to the education of youth is akin to buying insurance to keep the area’s economic future bright.

Some of the committee’s initiatives include a program called ‘Pathways’ that increased student retention by 30%.

Malden was just one of four locations in Massachusetts to apply for, and receive, funding to bring students and the community together in new and meaningful ways. The September kick-off was attended by officials from the office of the mayor of Malden, school principals, representatives from religious groups, and concerned parents.

Karen Hayes, of the mayor’s office, said:

“The collaboration is a true collaboration between the city, the community organizations, and the schools. So we try to bring together everyone we could think of that work with the youth that were actually heads of some great organizations — it was a great showing.”

While stakeholders from the education community are key members of Malden’s Promise, all are welcome to attend meetings. The next gathering will be on October 18.
