This March, the best of local youth dance in Canton and surrounding areas will compete in the Spirit of Dance Awards (SDA), with the potential to move on to a national competition this summer.
Spirit of Dance hosts competitions across the Northeast, promising a professional atmosphere for aspiring dancers. Young talents can get a taste of the big lights, awards for dance and choreography, and cash prizes. Awards will be given over the course of two days in a long list of categories, divided by experience, age and group size. Styles ranging from ballet to hip-hop will go head-to-head. Dancers or groups who perform well will qualify for “nationals”, held in successive weeks at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Hyannis, Massachusetts.
Canton is a new addition to SDA’s schedule, reflecting the competition’s growth. The event looks to capitalize on the renewed popularity of dance as a competitive pursuit, featuring dancers from TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance at its annual conventions. Dance events like this typically use flyer printing and brochure printing to attract families, as do dance classes and studios. There is clearly an appetite for competitions like SDA, as the Canton competition sold out more than a month in advance.
The Canton edition of the Spirit of Dance Awards will take place at Canton High School on March 28 and 29.
