Massachusetts launches charity bike-a-thon

The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition has announced that it will be holding a virtual bike event to help raise funds.

The fundraiser, called Bike for Prevention: Bike-A-Thon will challenge participants to run a set distance on their bicycle, whether it be an outdoor route or a stationary bike. The virtual format will allow for participants to bike in a time or place of their choice, whether it be a Massachusetts area like Canton or Boston, or further afield.

Virtual fundraisers have become popular over the last year as a way to both maintain social distancing and offer more flexibility than the traditional mass-start charity run or bike. These events, often advertised through tools like brochure printing and social media, can provide a physical challenge while at the same time helping a good cause.

Participants may register online as an individual or a family, and will receive a commemorative event T-shirt. The Bike-A-Thon will also allow participants to walk or run their distance of one mile or more. The funds raised will go towards the MBCC’s mission of helping to prevent breast cancer through raising awareness, conducting research, advocating for changes to public policy and increasing access to testing and care.

Bike for Prevention will take place between April 19 to 25, with participants able to complete their ride any time during the week.
