The 2020 Canton municipal election has now been rescheduled and will take place this June.
The election will see officials elected to municipal bodies like the board of selectment, school committee, and trusteeship of the public library. The most competitive race will see four candidates competing for two spots on the Board of Selectmen: incumbents Chris Connolly and Tom Theodore; retired attorney Lisa Lopez, who fell three votes short in the previous field; and Joe Amhrein. The rest of the field will be uncontested, with write-in options available.
The vote was originally set for March 31, but the board of selectmen voted to push it back two months. This means existing officials whose term would have expired on April 7 will stay in their positions until the new date. Provisions will be made for voting through absentee ballots or mail ballots. The vote could be a preview for how political campaigns and voting will take place in the age of social distancing. Local campaigns usually rely heavily on brochure printing, phone canvassing and poster printing, and these tools could be even more vital in the absence of campaign rallies.
The 2020 Canton town election will take place on June 16. Voters can register up until June 5, and must also register for absentee or early voting in advance if needed.
