Unique exhibits to open in museum in Andover

The first floor of the Addison Gallery of American Art on the campus of Phillips Academy in Andover is being redone so that exhibits of work by three groundbreaking artists can be displayed.

The trio of artists were instrumental in defining and transforming American art in the 20th Century. Such special exhibits are often promoted throughout a community with poster printing.

One exhibit is of the work of Georgia O’Keefe, a photographer, who is known for her paintings of landscapes, flowers, and skyscrapers. This exhibit reveals her approach to photography with close to 100 Modernist-style images. Her paintings and drawings are also part of the exhibit to represent the range of her talent. This exhibit runs until Sunday, June 12.

Another exhibit is of the photographs, drawings, prints, and paintings of Arthur Wesley Dow. His work has a mystical, anti-academic approach and emphasizes personal vision and emotion rather than real-life representations. He was also a teacher of O’Keefe when she attended Teachers College at Columbia University. This exhibit runs until Sunday, July 31.

The third exhibit features photogravures from the photography journal of Alfred Stieglitz and his visual poems and avant-garde drawings published in “291 magazine.” This exhibit also runs until Sunday, July 31.

All exhibits open on Saturday, February 26 and an opening reception will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, February 25.
