New police station to be built in Lawrence

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts will be providing $49 million to the city of Lawrence to build a new police station.

The funds will be used for the study, design and construction of the station, with an additional $10 million to be offered by the city if needed. Announcements of such funding are often publicized throughout the community with flyer printing services.

The funding was the result of the collaborative efforts of police chief Roy Vasque, State Representatives Marcos Devers, Christina Minicucci, and Frank Moran, State Senator Barry Finegold, State Secretary of Administration and Finance, Mike Heffernan, Governor Charlie Baker, and Mayor Daniel Rivera.

Finegold has been working with Lane Glenn, President of Northern Essex Community College, for many years to create a regional public safety center, which would include the town of Andover, for the teaching of urban policing. The police station would become part of the college campus.

In addition to specialized spaces for the police, the new station will have more meeting space so that residents and the police can get together to foster community engagement. Vasque expressed his gratitude to everyone who worked together to make possible this new police station that the members of the department and the community deserve.

It is expected that the study will be completed by spring 2021, with design and construction to follow.
