New fresh produce market opens in Andover

The Andover Town Produce Market is now opened throughout the year.

The market is run by the Community Services Department of Andover, which is partnering with Farmer Dave, who works with greenhouses so that their fresh produce is made available throughout the year. The market will accept state and federal assistance such as the Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

It will be opened regardless of the weather, meaning that in the event of rain or snow it will take place inside the Youth Center. A community volunteer, Ellen Townson, said every item can be bought with funds from SNAP or HIP.

Townson added that the Produce Market was created because very few people who went to the Andover Farmers Market, which runs from June through October, were using their SNAP funds. In addition, Townson said that HIP is a state program and its funds can only be used towards fresh fruits and vegetables available at farm stands, farmers’ markets, or community-supported agriculture farm share program.

The town is working on creating educational materials about HIP and SNAP. Such materials can be created and printed by local Print shops. Townson said that these materials are being translated into Mandarin and Russian, with plans to also translate them into Spanish and Portuguese.

The Produce Market will be open on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 11:00 am.
