New exhibit and renovations featured at special center in Andover

The Andover Center for History and Culture is featuring a new exhibit and planning on renovations to the center.

Currently on exhibit is Shawsheen: A Village Transformed. This exhibit tells the story of how Frye Village was transformed into the model community, Shawsheen Village, for those working in management at the American Woolen Company. Between 1919 and 1924, a mill and community buildings were constructed along with 200 homes. William Wood, president of the company, envisioned as community where those in management could work, live, and play with all amenities within walking distance. This exhibit is on display through Thursday, December 23, Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Brochure printing is often used for such exhibits to make them known to the public.

Elaine Clements, Executive Director of the Center, said that the recent capital campaign raised $30,000. The Massachusetts Cultural Council matched these funds to bring a total of $60,000 for the funding. This will go towards replacing the roof and performing other work on the exterior of the building.

The new program coordinator, Martha Tubinis, said there will also be a new patio area for the hosting of outdoor performances and programs. Clements added that a sitting area on the other side of the center will also be created with picnic tables and other amenities.
