Methuen observes opening of new high school

School, town, and state government officials, teachers and students celebrated the dedication ceremony at the new Methuen High School recently.

Located in a town close to Andover, printing companies were most likely kept busy in preparing Banners announcing the opening of the new school and the special occasion.

Speaking at the event was School Superintendent Judith Scannell, who commented that the renovation and expansion was very much needed. She praised the teaching staff for being dedicated and flexible during the construction and helping everyone overcome its many challenges.

The work on the building began in 2012 and involved renovating the building’s open classroom model of the 1970s. The cost was $98m to improve classroom spaces and add windows, modern science labs, a food court, media center, and a professional-style auditorium in which the ceremony took place.

During the renovation work, the freshmen were located at the Central School and employees of the school department shared space with the Police Department in the Quinn building. Over 1,600 students attended the High School while the renovation work was undertaken.

In attendance at the ceremony were several state representatives, State Senator Kathleen O’Connor Ives, United States Senator Edward Markey, and state Treasurer Steve Grossman. Grossman applauded the leadership of Mayor Stephen Zanni in changing the original contractors so as to prevent an overage of $6m.
