A grant has been given to the Andover Center for History and Culture for its work on a database of people of color who lived in the area pre-1850.
The funds are part of the Partnership Grant Program of The Essex National Heritage Commission, which awarded such grants to 12 different projects in this round of funding. The program is designed to support the activities of organizations and municipalities that enhance and preserve the natural, cultural, and historical resources of the Essex County National Heritage Area. News of such awards and the purpose of their funding is often made known throughout a region with flyer printing.
The Andover Center for History and Culture will now be able to start the second phase of its project on Andover Persons of Color. This part will develop an online database to highlight both enslaved and free people of color who lived in the town from 1646 to 1850.
There will be the ability to search by name and keywords to find an individual. Once the information is found, it will be in a readable and easy format, and may include a narrative.
Essex Heritage said the recipients of these funds will be working to implement a range of interpretive, educational, and preservation projects throughout the Merrimack Valley and North Shore areas.
