Andover student earns prestigious international scholarship

An Andover student is one of the recipients of the Fulbright Student fellowship recipients for the 2019-20 academic year.

Sarah Rothmann graduated from Andover High School in 2015 and from Bates College this past spring.

The Fulbright is the flagship international educational exchange program that is sponsored by the United States Department of State. The Fulbright enables Americans to travel to many countries to conduct research, study, or teach in an effort to promote understanding around the world. Poster printing is often used to announce such achievements throughout a proud home and college community.

An English Teaching Assistant award was given to Rothmann for travel to the Czech Republic. During her time at Bates, Rothmann was an avid student of her educational studies. She was an assistant in the classroom with a specialization in special education and language arts at two elementary schools and the middle school in Lewiston, Maine. After her travel abroad, she plans to continue writing and pursue a career in teaching.

Clayton Spencer, president of Bates College, commented that this year has been extraordinary for Fulbright awards at Bates, with 25 students receiving such awards. That so many students from the college are successful in receiving these awards demonstrates the breadth and strength of the education these students receive at Bates, their ability to engage in real-world problems and to have string relationships with members of the faculty.
