The MassTrails Grant Program of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has awarded the town of Andover an amount of $500,000 to build the Haggetts Pond Rail Trail.
The western border of the pond, which has a railbed, will be converted into a paved path for multiple uses. It will run from Haggetts Pond Road for 4,500 feet to a new boardwalk built over the pond. The paved trail will be 10 to 12 feet wide, will be ADA accessible, and will provide opportunities for all people to enjoy the pond and its surrounding pristine environment.
New benches and Signs about native plants and wildlife along the trail, the history of rail transport in Massachusetts, information about Haggetts Pond, and the Andover Water Department will be installed along the trail. At the end of the trail there will be a scenic view of the pond. More details about such trails and their opportunities is often provided with brochure printing.
Director of Facilities for Andover, Janet Nicosia, said that building a trail accessible to all at Haggetts Pond is important for the community and the town. She expressed her gratitude that this project was selected to be funded by the MassTrails Grant Program.
Construction of the trail will begin later this year. The Department of Facilities and Department of Public Works will be jointly supporting this project.
