Andover receives funding for flood mitigation

The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs through its Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program has awarded a grant in the amount of $81,900 to the town of Andover.

Announcements of such significant grants and their benefits for a town are often disseminated throughout the community with flyer printing.

This is the third year in a row that a grant from the MVP Program has been awarded to the town. The grant will build on the efforts of the town of previous years to continue the design process of a nature-based or flood storage project at the Lower Shawsheen Soccer Field.

A preliminary engineering design plan will be developed and will include modifications to the hydraulic model of the Shawsheen River for assessing the effects of flood mitigation and updating the data collection process.

The funding will also enable the town to continue to evaluate acquiring additional property along the Shawsheen River for restoration and reconnection of the floodplain. Furthermore, the town will now be able to share previous findings from flood modeling with landowners, look for willing sellers, and begin creating right-to-purchase agreements.

Joyce-Losick Yang, Director of Sustainability, expressed her gratitude to the state for this funding, which will enable the town to be proactive in enhancing and advancing flood resistance at the Lower Shawsheen Soccer Field.
