Andover considers shared use path

The evaluation of a shared use path on Lincoln Street is currently underway in Andover.

The Complete Streets Prioritization Plan that was recently finalized identified this as of great importance. Lincoln Street runs between Shawsheen Road and Lowell Street and is about a half-mile long.

News and more information about such proposed changes in a town can be made known with flyer printing.

Improving the safety of pedestrians would be one intention of creating a shared use path on Lincoln Street as it currently has limited accommodations for pedestrians. The street is used by students in the Andover Public Schools to travel to and from West Middle School and Andover High School. The path would also close a gap in the sidewalk along the street that exposes pedestrians to vehicular traffic on the street, and would also provide connectivity to a shared use path that is planned for Lowell Street.

The town has determined that if the traffic on Lincoln Street were to be for vehicles traveling southbound only, then this would enable a shared use path to be created while also limiting the impacts to drainage, private property, and trees. During the evaluation period, vehicular traffic will be restricted in this fashion and there will be flex posts and traffic barrels installed that will replicate the proposed width of the shared use path.

This evaluation will run until Sunday September 22.
