The former Osgood Landing site in North Andover will soon become home to an Amazon distribution center.
Hillwood, a real estate development firm based in Dallas, is being used by the online retail giant to help develop similar sites across the country to improve its distribution network across the United States. Amazon is looking to become less reliant on third-party shipping companies, such as the United States Postal Service and UPS, and to increase its options for same-day delivery.
Senior vice president of Hillwood, Gary Frederick, said the new facility could bring as many as 1,500 jobs to North Andover. Frederick added that starting salaries will begin at $15 an hour. Locals will most likely look for employment at this new facility, so resumé and business card printing may get a boost in the area.
Frederick spoke of the ideal use of this facility for Amazon, as it will be one that be highly automated. The facility was built in 1959 by Western Electric to manufacture equipment for AT&T. After AT&T was broken up, the facility was known as AT&T Merrimack Valley Works. Lucent Technologies was then spun off from AT&T Merrimack and occupied the building, but left it over 10 years ago.
A new warehouse facility would be built after the purchase of the property by Hillman and the demolition of the existing facility.
