A construction permit was recently filed by the Louisville Zoo detailing the Kentucky Trails exhibit to be built at the zoo’s 17.5-acre south end.
A recent statement from the zoo states that a groundbreaking for the $100m project will take place in early 2027. Included will be a water feature, gardens, walking trails, and open prairies. Visitors to the new zoo area will enjoy a close-up viewing of native Kentucky animals such as elks, bison, bobcats, and black bears.

Funding for the project will be coming from a variety of sources. The Kentucky General Assembly announced in 2022 that it would invest $10m for the construction of the habitat and $5m has been allocated by the state. Moreover, in his latest city budget proposal, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg has included $5m for the zoo’s project and the zoo has received some small private donations, leaving it to try and fundraise $77.1m for the project’s completion.
Construction is to consist of several phases with an anticipated completion date in summer 2029.
The zoo’s popular train, now fully electric, will be making a return with its tracks repositioned to avoid the area of the property that has a sinkhole.
