Broadcast TV technology upgrade for Louisville in September

In September, new digital television technology will be introduced in Louisville for over-the-air broadcasts.

Soon, most Louisville residents will be able to enjoy what half of the U.S. is already experiencing, NextGen TV technology, also known as ATSC 3.0. NextGen offers ultra-high-definition video with theater-quality sound and sharper pictures.

There is no charge for the upgrade, although some viewers will have to rescan their compatible televisions. Only those using an antenna to tune in over-the-air television will have to do the rescan. A rescan is not required for those subscribing to cable or satellite service.

Flyer printing services are useful for informing large numbers of people of developments like this.

A rescan enables a TV to find all the available channels within the viewer’s area. It does not require any additional equipment and can be done by the viewer. The scanning process can be accomplished by selecting Scan or Autotune from a converter box or TV menu, upon which the process proceeds automatically and takes a few minutes.

As the technology is implemented, more features will be included in the digital TV programming. Possibilities for added features include more detailed emergency alerts, personalized navigation guides, and access to bonus content. One option being considered will allow the viewer to choose the from multiple camera angles as they watch.

The upgrade is scheduled for 8:00 am on Monday, September 12. To ensure the upgrades have finalized, viewers are advised to wait until Monday afternoon to rescan.
