Old Kentucky Christmas takes visitors back to simpler times

Florence residents can take a short drive and experience a trip taking them back hundreds of years.

An Old Kentucky Christmas celebrates a colonial Christmas with a replicated village where visitors learn and witness how people in the 1800s celebrated Christmas.

The village is made up old-style shops, where volunteers dress up in 19th-Century costumes. There are also various indoor and outdoor activities and a petting zoo. Inside the main building there are Christmas concerts from students at local schools.

The First Church of Christ in Burlington organizes the event every year. There is no admission fee, and schools are offered free field trips to the site. The 60-90 minute visits begin at 9:00 am and need to be booked ahead. Close to 1,000 students visit every year.

Students visit Wicks and Wax, School House, General Store, Sweet Tooth, Grandma's Cookies, Wood Works, and the petting zoo.

December 14 from 10:00 am to noon is devoted to welcoming families with special needs, where it is not as crowded and there are quiet rooms.

In the days before Print shops, people used charcoal pencils and ink instead. Visitors can try their hand at signing their name with a quill or pencil at the School House. Modern Print shops, however, are useful for events like these to Print maps and Brochures that visitors can use to navigate the event.

An Old Kentucky Christmas takes place December 12 through to 15 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at 6080 Ernst Camp Road, in Burlington, just northwest of Florence.
