In a special meeting, the Florence City Council approved a Change of Concept Development Plan, allowing the project to move forward.
The special meeting was called so that they could vote before the city’s statutory deadline of November 4th. Council members Gary Winn, David Schneider, Patricia Wingo and Diane Whalen, voted in favor of the plan, while Angie Cable and Lesley Chambers voted against.
The proposed Wawa has been the topic of months of debate by Florence officials. The council’s Planning and Zoning Committee met twice and discussed the request for nearly three hours.
Florence employees spent a lot of time reviewing consultant reports, plans and data. Nine conditions, including lighting, landscaping, fencing, signage and the architecture of the building, were attached to the committee’s approval during an earlier meeting. Official communications are usually printed on Letterheads.
Before the vote, Whalen said:
“If the governing body, whether it’s the city or the county, doesn’t take official action, then it goes back to the Planning Commission’s recommendation.”
The proposed development will now be reviewed by several agencies, including the Florence Planning Commission and the Florence Council.
