Local scout troop poses questions to Florence Council

Florence Christian Church-based Scout Troop 1 recently put Florence Council members on the hot seat with a series of question while exploring how city government works in order to meet their First Class requirements.

Questions posed by the scouts, which included five girls - the troop’s first female members – ran the gamut of topics. Diane Whalen, the city’s mayor responded to the question of “what are the biggest problems facing Florence” with answers including traffic and the city’s changing retail environment.

Brochure printing is one of the ways groups are able to keep the public up to date on changes in an organization such as the Boy Scouts.

Another query was why along Aero Parkway all the trees had been cut down, and it was explained to the scouts that online retailer Amazon, among others, had purchased the land from a farmer and had exercised their right to remove the trees. Mayor Whalen further explained that Florence has an urban forestry commission that attempts to work with landowners to replace trees, but that they have no authority to force owners to do anything with their own land.

After each scout asked the question he or she had prepared ahead of time and received an answer from Mayor Whalen and members of council, the group was congratulated on preparing themselves to become community leaders. Additionally, they were commended for doing their part in helping to integrate girls into the Boy Scouts.
