Overland Park hosts 10th annual barbecue challenge
Kansas is known for its love of barbecue, and Overland Park is no exception. The Kansas City suburb recently hosted the 10th Annual VFW Post 846 BBQ Challenge, a world-class competition that left no flank ungrilled.
A total of 46 crack barbecue teams went head to head, with over 50 judges having the enviable task of declaring a winner.
The event got off to an inauspicious start, with a brief downpour marring the end of the first round. The skies remained overcast for the rest of the day, but neither rain, snow nor sleet would stop the BBQ. Competitions were held for chicken, pork ribs, brisket, sausage, pork, and dessert. In the end, The Original Smoke Ringers won the grand prize, with Skunk River BBQ claiming runner-up, as well as the chicken and dessert titles.
The VFW Post Challenge was a sanctioned event by the Kansas City Barbecue Society. More than a local group, the KCBS sanctions over 500 competitions a year all around the globe, with their April calendar including events in cities as far-flung as Wels, Austria and San Jose, Costa Rica. Local food events like these typically advertise through both social media and more traditional methods like flyer printing and poster printing.
Competitions such as this provide chefs with a chance to prove their mettle, and give attendees an opportunity to connect with local food culture and hopefully snag some good eats.
