Overland Park activity to explore plant-based dyes
Naturally sourced textile colors can come from plants, fungi, and other organic materials, and a workshop on the way for Overland Park will provide an introduction to horticultural-based dyes.
Many of the items used by those who enjoy working with naturally sourced dyes can be grown in the home garden. Meagan Condon from Luthvarian Fiber Arts will share her knowledge and love of the practice of preparing botanical dyes in this way, and tickets are $55 each.
Learners in the session will find out which of the plants that are grown at the Arboretum may be used to color various types of yard, and each will go home with a skein they have dyed themselves. As it will be a hands-on activity, registrants are reminded to wear clothes that will not be harmed if the dye splashes, and all items needed for the class will be provided.
The chance to learn about plant-based dyes and other naturally sourced materials may be appreciated by crafters who care about sustainability. Information and tip sheets, recipe cards, and other materials for the participants to keep and take home and the end of an activity can be ordered in advance from print shops.
Overland Park and Arboretum and Botanical Gardens will be providing the inside scoop on natural dyes on Sunday, May 4. The start time will be 11:00 am.
