Kansas City tavern to double as bookstore
Afterword Tavern & Shelves, set to open this summer in Kansas City, is an unusual combination of businesses. It will be a full-fledged bar and cafe as well as an independent bookstore.
The new business's owners, however, argue that this combination is not so strange at all. Their homepage argues that books, food, and drink are all ways to bring people together and get a good conversation going. Afterword also has a larger goal, as the site notes:
"At a philosophical level we are peddling discovery and the city in which we live."
Literate customers from Kansas City and surrounding areas such as Overland Park and Lawrence may visit Afterword to pick up a book and spend some time arguing with friends over literature, philosophy, or anything else over a couple of drinks. The bar, which opens on June 20, is set to offer local beer, wine, and spirits, as well as small plates and coffee. As for books, there will be a carefully-curated selection of titles available that are designed to appeal to a wide variety of readers.
Launching a restaurant, or any small business, is a challenge. Successful bars must build clientele through good service and good drink, but also through advertising, often using tools like flyer printing or giving out promotional products to drum up business.
