When people think of a shade garden, an Evanston online workshop will show there is a whole world of possibilities for low light beds that goes beyond the usual hostas and astilbes.
Gardens that are shaded by buildings or trees may present a special challenge to home gardeners, so the “Designing the Shade Garden” virtual session will present some possible solutions. A two-hour-long activity, registration starts at $32 each.
The participants will discover the reasons why gardening in low light is not always easy, and issues like poor and dry soils, tree roots, and other concerns will all be addressed. They will be given tips for plant selections that offer four seasons of interest, including cultivars that boast colorful blooms or leaves. The importance of texture will be discussed, and registration will close two days ahead of the workshop.
Those who opt to register for both this class and the “Designing the Sunny Border” session will be offered a 10% discount. Learning materials for both in-person and online events may be ordered from an area printing services company.
The Chicago Botanic Garden will be hosting this information session for area green thumbs on March 16. It will begin at 6:30 pm, and joining instructions will be sent out to the attendees the day before it will be held.
