When people think of hanging baskets, flowers usually come to mind, but an Evanston area workshop will turn that assumption on its head.
Julia Zoltowsky, who is a horticulturist at Chicago Botanic Garden, will show how a hanging basket can be used to grow lettuce for the kitchen table, and it will be a hands-on learning session. Registration is open to both garden members and non-members alike, and the event is intended for adults only.
Zoltowsky will be demonstrating how easy it can be to grow lettuce in a basket, and she will provide tips for cultivar selection and care. She will also teach how to harvest the leaves so the planet will continue to be productive throughout the season. Everyone is asked to bring a pair of gloves to wear while they work, and they will each go home with a new hanging garden bed for their home.
People involved in this type of learning session often benefit from being supplied with cards that provide additional tips for caring for their plants. These can be sourced from local Stationery printers, which will even be able to laminate them for long-term use.
The workshop will take place on April 22. The registration fee starts at $62 each, and the venue for the function will be located at 1000 Lake Cook Road in Glencoe.
