Golden Apple gifted to local educator

Several school teachers were presented with Golden Apple Awards last month in the Chicagoland area, and a teacher at Evanston’s own Orrington Elementary School was among them.

James Schamber, who teaches second grade, was surprised in his Orrington Elementary school classroom when the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching was presented to him. Schamber was one of 10 pre-K to 3rd grade teachers chosen from among more than 600 nominees throughout the Chicago area.

Now in its 30th year, the Golden Apple award honors teachers who do an outstanding job in building a stronger and better educated society through teaching. It is presented by the nonprofit, Golden Apple, which is committed to celebrating and developing teachers who make life-changing differences in the lives of their students.

According to a news release, Schamber makes extensive use of humor in his classroom, as well as singing, dancing, and technology all to create a comfortable, fun, and engaging classroom environment. Schools, as well as individual instructors, find that customized items such as Drinkware, pencils, tablets and the like sourced from a local printing company also increase the fun factor in education, as well as building school spirit.

As a recipient of the Golden Apple Award, Schamber will receive a spring quarter sabbatical to study, tuition free, at Northwestern University, in addition to a $5,000 cash award.
