Evanston raises age of legal tobacco purchase

On October 27, an ordinance was passed outlawing the sale of tobacco products within the Evanston city limits to those under the age of 21.

It took them awhile, with proposals and revisions being debated for weeks and even a delayed vote, but the Evanston City Council finally came to its decision. They voted unanimously to ban the sale of tobacco products as well as any nicotine delivery system for those under 21.

The move by council carries even more significance because the city is home to Northwestern University, which gives Evanston a higher than average number of youths to be impacted by the ban. The new ordinance makes Evanston the first Illinois city to raise the minimum legal purchase age to 21. The new age restriction went into effect November 8.

Brochure printers are often called upon to assist in anti-smoking campaigns to provide information, such as highlighting the dangers of smoking and strategies to quit. Now, retail establishment will be relying on printing companies to produce Signs explaining the new ordinance to patrons. Retailers who do not follow the ordinance face fines of $200 to $500.

Evanston may be the only city in the state to have raised the legal age to purchase tobacco, but there are at least 40 other municipalities across the country who have already enacted similar laws.
