Evanston bike initiative wheeled out

In partnership with the City of Chicago, Evanston will be participating in the Divvy Bike Share program this month. A community meeting will be held to inform and receive input.

As a result of a $3m state investment, 700 new bikes will be added to Evanston, Chicago, and Oak Park this year, as well as 70 docking stations.

A bike sharing system enables bicycles to be available to residents, visitors, and employees on a short-term basis. Bike sharing is growing in popularity; Chicago already has 4,000 bicycles and 400 stations providing riding opportunities to its residents and visitors.

Representatives from the City of Evanston and Divvy will be on hand at the upcoming meeting to give an overview of the initiative and to listen to recommendations for station placement. Attendees will be given the opportunity to have their questions answered and vote on the initial eight Evanston station locations.

To maximize the effectiveness of the bike share program, businesses and organizations are encouraged to become partners or sponsors. They can provide or subsidize bike sharing for their employees, members, or patrons, perhaps using a Print company to provide information to them and the public at large.

To inform the public, as well as gather suggestions for its implementation, a meeting concerning the Divvy Bike Share program will be held at the Morton Civic Center Council Chambers on January 13, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
