YMCA ends April with day for the kids
The Edwardsville YMCA recently hosted a ‘Healthy Kids Day’ that showed both parents and children ways to keep active and have fun when school isn't in session.
A number of organizations came to the Y to share their expertise with families. Among those in attendance were Dynamic Martial Arts, the Jammin' Jumpers Bounce House, Sylvan Learning Center, Anderson Hospital, the Edwardsville Children's Museum, and Associated Pediatric Dentistry.
Parents and children who attended the April 29 event learned a number of ways to stay active in the summer months. The YMCA's family event director, Natasha Howard, said Healthy Kids Day is a “national initiative”.
Kids learned martial arts moves, enjoyed bouncing in the Bounce House, and played with hula hoops. They also had fun watching martial arts demonstrations, having their faces painted, and playing video games. The rock climbing tower at the Y was available as well.
Howard said she liked the day because the activities were fun, and when children are having fun, they are likely to keep doing the activity, which plays into the idea of keeping them active.
YMCA officials might consider building on the success of the day by working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for attendees, reminding them of the activities that will be available during the upcoming school vacation.
