Rotary Club helps the needy
The Goshen Rotary Club, which usually meets in Edwardsville on Wednesdays, and which serves this and other nearby communities, came to the aid of those in need this holiday season.
After a December meeting, the group crossed the street from its customary meeting place and went to the Market Basket, where members picked up bags of food to distribute to needy families.
Kevin Rust, one of the organizers of the event, said this was the first time the Market Basket had supplied the food—up until this year, the group went to the Supervalu in Troy. However, according to Rust, there is now a Rotary Club in Troy to handle distribution there, despite the fact that Supervalu has been an exceptional ally in the effort to feed the hungry. In addition, since the Market Basket is near Rotary's meeting place, it is more convenient to get food there than to drive to Troy.
In 2016, Goshen Rotary provided assistance to about 140 families, each of which received three bags of food. Rust said the food was packaged so that families could prepare Christmas dinner, and also have food for additional meals. Christmas-type food items included ham, applesauce, and green beans, while other items in the bags were staples like oatmeal, pasta, and pasta sauce. The bags were distributed in time for Christmas.
