What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

JewelRide and library team up for reading challenge

A non-emergency medical transportation company, JewelRide, is joining the Edwardsville Public Library in sponsoring a Books for Bikes Reading Challenge this month.

The challenge encourages children to read books and then log their progress. They can then enter to win one of the 14 bikes that will be given away as grand prizes on August 6. Children from kindergarten through eighth grade are eligible to take part in the reading challenge, which runs through Sunday, July 31.

Tapiwa Mupereki, the owner of JewelRide is a big believer in the power of reading, saying:

“My mother really believed in reading. If you can read, you can change the trajectory of your life.”

The promotion of a healthy lifestyle for the youth of Edwardsville is one thing that Mupereki hopes will come out of Books for Bikes. The challenge is just one of several investments he is making to benefit the residents of the Metro East community.

Letting people know about programs they may benefit from often involves a flyer printing service.

Jill Schardt, the Edwardsville Public Library Director, pointed out that prizes work well in encouraging children to take part in summer reading, which in turn works to prevent the so-called “summer slide” where kids return to school out of practice.

In addition to the Edwardsville Public Library and JewelRide, other sponsors for the Books for Bikes Reading Challenge include The Cyclery and Fitness Center, BJ’s Printables, YCG Accounting and Dr. Hyten.
