Guitar superstar returning to Edwardsville
A master guitarist is on his way back to Edwardsville's Wildey Theatre.
Eric Gales is a blues-rock guitarist who is also known as Raw Dawg. Although he is not left-handed naturally, he plays the guitar with his left hand, a technique taught him by his brother Eugene, a bass player who is left-handed. His technique has led to comparisons with Jimi Hendrix, but Gales has a sound all his own, a blend of rock and blues that has been influenced by artists as different as Eric Johnson and Albert King.
Gales began playing the guitar when he was four, taught by Manuel and Eugene, his older brothers. Eric started appearing at blues competitions in 1985, with Eugene on bass, backing him up. He gained a following, and in 1990, Elektra Records signed Eric and Eugene who, with drummer Hubert Crawford, released two albums. “The Eric Gales Band” came out in 1991, and in 1993, they released “Picture of a Thousand Faces.” In 1991, a readers' poll at “Guitar World” magazine gave Eric the title “Best New Talent.”
A review of Eric Gales in performance says:
The Eric Gales Band will appear at the Wildey Theatre on August 20, at 7.30 pm. Poster printing is often used to publicize events like this.

“I saw him play 20 years ago . . . he's even better now. . . . This guy channels music from the heart . . . This guy ticks all the boxes.”
