What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

Food trucks could be coming to Edwardsville industries

Employees working at the various companies housed in the Gateway Commerce Center in Edwardsville may soon have additional options for lunch, as the city considers its ordinances governing food truck operations.

The Administrative and Community Services Committee (ACS) recently proposed changing the way a food truck is defined, because Madison County changed its regulations late last year. The amendment would allow food trucks to enter properties five acres in size or larger, according to Emily Fultz, the city planner. The trucks would be charged an annual fee of $100, or a special event rate of $75.

The goal of changing the ordinance is to allow the trucks to operate in the Gateway Commerce Center, which is home to such companies as World Wide Technology, Hershey's, and Amazon. The center is along I-255, and there are few, if any, restaurants or even fast food establishments nearby. Small businesses like food trucks can help to build brand loyalty by distributing promotional products to their first customers.

Food trucks would also be allowed to park on city streets during special events. Will Krause, a city alderman, said that Goshen Market's leaders are still trying to decide where, and how often, to allow food trucks to participate in the event, which starts soon.

Fultz added that she has not heard local businesses complaining about possible “competition” from the food trucks. The measure will next go to the city council for a first reading.
