What's Happening in Edwardsville, IL…

Edwardsville welcomes Voices of the Past

A popular program is returning to Edwardsville’s Woodlawn Cemetery next month, for the third year in a row.

The event, known as Voices of the Past, uses reenactors to tell the stories of interesting people. In 2015, the event focused on residents of Edwardsville who lived during the mid-1800s, and have had streets named in their honor. This year, the event will take a look at some of the more mysterious monuments located in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The event comprises walking tours through the cemetery, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its chapel. Each tour lasts approximately an hour, and includes stops at seven different graves, where re-enactors will tell the story of the person buried there. One of those is ‘Rebel Bob’, allegedly a Confederate soldier who came to be buried among Union troops, according to the Woodlawn Cemetery Board’s Barb Pizzini. Reenactors will tell how Bob came to lie among his enemies.

This year, the event has been shortened to just one weekend: October 8 and 9, Saturday and Sunday. On both days, tours will start at 1:00 pm, with the final tour at 2:30 pm. On Saturday, there will be an additional candlelight tour at 7:00 pm.

Events like these can be enhanced when organizers work with brochure printing companies, which can create informative booklets explaining histories of locations, and of people involved in them.
