Edwardsville to indulge in festive arts
The Parks and Recreation Department of Edwardsville, Illinois, is getting ready to hold its annual art competition.
The Holiday Art Contest, which is sponsored by the First Clover Leaf Bank, has been held every year since 2005. The city's assistant recreation coordinator, Hayley Verheyen, says the contest usually gets between 40 and 50 entries.
The contest is open to children in kindergarten through the sixth grade, and they are limited to work no larger than 12 x 14 inches. They can paint, color, or draw the subject, but they have to choose from one of four pre-selected themes: ‘Holiday at Leclaire Park’, ‘My Family Holiday’, ‘Holiday in Downtown Edwardsville’, or ‘Holiday at City Park’.
According to Verheyen, themes are chosen because they all have to do with the parks department, which sponsors the contest. The family holiday is usually the favorite category, with children drawing family members, their fireplace, or a Christmas tree.
Parks and Recreation officials could work with postcard printing companies to create mailers for residents to remind them of the contest.
There will be three winners chosen from each grade, and all will receive gift cards from Target in varying amounts. In addition, winning entries will be displayed in City Hall windows from December 17 to January 2. Entries have to be received by December 15. For further information, contact the parks department.
