Edwardsville seeks to improve parks amd recreational opportunities
Edwardsville has begun a campaign to raise funds to boost or construct local parks, and provide greater opportunities for recreation.
The city has launched ‘The Better Place to Play’ effort in order to raise $12m to build a number of fun places to play.
These include a “spray and play” park, a teen center, an ice rink, and a Sports Park that will be a state-of-the-art facility for softball, baseball, and soccer players. The parks are aimed at better serving the city's residents, as well as visitors from around the area.
Hal Patton, Edwardsville's mayor, has long had a goal of improving the city's park system, and calls the upcoming campaign an “incredible opportunity” for the city to have a real impact on “the future of creation in this wonderful community”.
He added that Edwardsville is seeking various sources of funding for each individual project, including grants, corporate sponsorships, donations, and monies from the capital improvement fund.
He also noted that despite the fact Edwardsville's population has doubled over the past 20 years, there has been no corresponding improvement in park facilities. He added that walking trails are part of the plans, and he hopes that the opportunity to exercise will help the overall health of residents.
City officials could work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents describing the new parks system and its amenities.
