Edwardsville scholars to extend their school week
In what may seem an unusual move, students from Edwardsville High School have signed up to go to class on Saturdays.
The individuals in question are honor students who have chosen to participate in the ‘2015 Saturday Scholars Program’. The program allows the students to hear educational lectures on a wide variety of subjects and careers, with talks scheduled throughout February.
The first program this year will be on February 7. Lecturers Jeffrey Church (who is with the Illinois Department of Transportation) and Randy Hitt (from the Missouri Department of Transportation) will talk about a major construction project. Their presentation is titled ‘Building the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge’.
On February 14, Frank Doll, who owns a dairy farm, will discuss “Genomic Dairy Cattle.”
On the 21st, the presenter is Jim Wible, who is with PGAV Destinations in St. Louis. The company is an architecture firm, and its Destinations branch designs structures like zoo enclosures and theme park exhibits. He will speak about “Designing Ball Park Village and Theme Parks.”
The last lecture in the series is on February 28, when students will take a field trip to the cadaver lab at St. Louis University.
Lectures run from 1:30 to 3:30 pm each Saturday throughout the month, and students pay a small fee to participate.
Program organizers might work with a flyer printing company to make sure students have a handout that lists the programs, and any details necessary.
