Eager Edwardsville official gives early start to new role
Edwardsville has hired its first Economic and Community Development Director in the form of Walter Williams; however, Williams went to work despite the fact that at the time, his position did not officially exist.
Since that time, the Administrative and Community Services Committee approved the ordinance that created the post, and recommended that the rules be suspended and it be passed on the first reading. The reason for the rapid passage is that Williams was already at work.
The position carries a great deal of responsibility and a number of important duties. Among others, Williams will be responsible for devising development strategies for Edwardsville for both the short and long term. He will also be available to business owners, developers and contractors to help guide them through various city processes, such as inspections and permitting. In addition, he will be asked to pool data from various sources and use it to compile narrative reports that can be used by city officials.
Williams will also implement strategies to help with business retention, and help develop policies to aid the city in meeting its goals with regard to economic development. He will also report on any changes to regulations or laws affecting business development.
Edwardsville officials could work with a business card printing company to make sure Williams has the cards appropriate to his new position.
