University of Illinois veterinary school to hold open house

The only veterinary school in Illinois is at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and it is ready to open its full premises to the public for a day.

The UI Vet Med Open House is inviting everybody to take a behind-the-scenes peek at the college. From animal lovers to those considering a career in veterinary medicine, everyone will enjoy learning about the field and meeting the animals.

Over 40 hands-on demonstrations and educational exhibits are planned. Visitors can meet cows, dogs, cats, owls, sheep, parrots, and horses, as well as more exotic animals such as a Pac-Man frog named Huckleberry and a pot-bellied pig named Arnold.

Visitors will have a chance to milk a cow, and can take a look at an “illustrated” horse that has been painted to show where its bones are. The Illini Service Dogs will give a demonstration, as will a horse-shoeing expert. A program about dog obedience is also planned, and children are encouraged to bring slightly-injured toys to Teddy Bear Repair.

The Clinical Skills Learning Center, which houses state-of-the art teaching equipment, will be open to visitors as well.

The open house is scheduled for tomorrow, October 2, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and is free.

Events such as these can be enhanced when organizers work with flyer printing companies, which can create handouts that list events and times, and provide maps of venues so exhibits are easy to find.
