Champaign helps kids learn to be safe when home alone

Being home alone for the first time is a rite of passage for many kids, and a Champaign area activity will give parents or guardians peace of mind when their child is on their own.

The Safe@Home program will help its registrants build confidence in themselves to be at home alone, and it will take place during the evening. The Phillips Recreation Center will be the location for the activity.

The facilitator for the workshop will teach about safe practices and other good habits, and the kids will also find out what to do should an emergency arise. Preventing accidents and other unsafe situations will be emphasized and dealing with unexpected conditions such as weather emergencies and power failures will also be discussed. The Safe Sitter First Aid chart will be introduced, and the class is best suited to youth in grades 4 to 7.

A workshop often compresses a lot of information into a relatively small amount of time, and there may not be enough room in the agenda for all the pertinent information. Stationery printers can supply everything from Copies of handouts to specially designed certificates of completion to distribute when the activity draws to a close.

Champaign parents who want to give their kids the confidence to be home alone are invited to register their child now, as space may fill up fast. It will be offered on June 6th, and early bird tickets will be available until May 31st.
