Event welcomes Champaign seed savers

The seed saving movement works to preserve biodiversity and also make home horticulture more accessible, and a Champaign area activity has been organized to help foster the practice.

A Community Seed Exchange is in the works, held at Sola Gratia Farm in Urbana. Anyone interested is welcome, no matter what their level of experience with seed saving may be, and it will provide an opportunity for newbies to get their feet wet.

Those who plan on attending are asked to ensure their seeds are clean, and they should also bring Envelopes or a container for any they swap. Permanent markers may also come in handy for labeling.

While no fee is being charged, participants are asked to consider making a $10 donation at the door. These monies will be used to support community feeding programs and other initiatives. As there are only a limited number of parking spaces, carpooling is encouraged.

Seed saving and other sustainable horticultural practices provide a novel opportunity to meet others who engage in the activity. Stationery printers can provide pre-printed Envelopes for storing seeds that keep them dry and stable for planting time.

Champaign’s seed savers and those who would like to learn more are welcome to be part of this activity set for Saturday, January 17 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The venue can be found at 1821 E. Mumford Drive in Urbana.
